Method of finalisation

Of the 10,450 federal defendants finalised in 2012–13:

    • 7,162 (69%) were proven guilty;
    • 2,306 (22%) had charges withdrawn by the prosecution;
    • 311 (3%) were acquitted; and
    • 668 (6%) were finalised by another method of finalisation such as by transfer to another court level. (Table 6)
The most common principal federal offences to be finalised as proven guilty were:
    • Offences against justice (27%);
    • Abduction, harassment and other offences against the person (22%); and
    • Fraud and deception (20%). (Table 6)
Federal defendants charged with Abduction, harassment and other offences against the person comprised 41% of all cases that were acquitted. (Table 6)
